On May 15, the Sleep Mind Health Research team visited our long-term partners at the Hands Community Center in the Bronx to host a community-focused Zumba session. The event aimed to promote physical activity as a foundational pillar of healthy sleep hygiene while strengthening our ongoing relationship with the local community.
Physical exercise is well-documented to improve sleep quality and duration. This session provided an active, accessible platform to share these benefits directly. Our team facilitated discussions about sleep health practices and distributed evidence-based resources to participants.
Stepping outside of a traditional research environment to share in this experience of collective movement and joy was a powerful reminder of what meaningful research is truly about: building sustained, mutually beneficial relationships with communities, aligning our efforts with community needs, and ensuring that public health research translates into equitable impact.
We extend our gratitude to the staff at the Hands Community Center for their energy, time, and collaboration, and we look forward to continued work together.
